Relationship Patterns – Intense Affection Can Be a Red Flag

When you meet someone who texts constantly, makes grand gestures, and tells you you’re different from every other girl he’s met, it can be quite intoxicating. The only problem is you’ve known him for less than a month!

I’ve been through this before and didn’t realize it at the time, but this is what we now know as love bombing, and it’s a big red flag.

A Breakdown of Love Bombing

Love-bombing is an overwhelming display of attention, affection, and flattery used to fast-track intimacy and create emotional dependency before you’ve had a chance to actually know someone.

The intensity isn’t a measure of how much he loves you, but a measure of how quickly he needs you hooked.

How Do I Recognize Love Bombing?

  • Constant texting, calling, and showing up in the first few weeks.
  • Telling you he’s never felt that way about anyone, even though he’s known you for less than a month.
  • Making you feel like the relationship is already serious before you’ve decided it is.
  • Subtle disappointment or withdrawal when you don’t match his intensity.

Speed is the whole mechanism of love bombing. When things move fast, you don’t get to observe him; you only get to feel him.

It’s very easy to manufacture feelings in the early stages, but by the time the intensity eventually drops, you’re already emotionally invested in a person you don’t really know yet.

Three Things You Can Do About Love Bombing

  1. Let time do what it does. Genuine connection takes time to build and develop. It does not arrive fully formed.
  2. Pay attention to how you feel vs. what you actually know about him. These are two very different things.
  3. Watch what happens when you slow down the pace of the relationship. Someone safe will respect your pace, while someone love-bombing you will make you feel guilty for it.
